With summer in full force and more Minnesotans hitting the roads going from point A to point B, there’s a life-saving law many drivers still don’t know about or don’t practice faithfully, The Ted Foss Move Over Law. This law was enacted after Minnesota State Trooper Ted Foss was killed on the shoulder of I-90 during a routine traffic stop. A passing vehicle failed to move over and Corporal Ted Foss lost his life. This law now protects anyone stopped on the roadside, including law enforcement, fire, ambulance, EMS, road maintenance, road crews, utility workers, and even everyday drivers with car trouble. According to Cottonwood County Sheriff, Jason Purrington, “It’s a safety issue for first responders and motorists. We want people to be aware, and this law protects everyone out there.” Drivers need to remember, when travelling on a road with 2 or more lanes going in the same direction, you must move over one full lane from stopped authorized vehicles, stalled vehicles or disabled vehicles with their hazard lights activated. In situations where it’s not safe to move over, in like heavy traffic, you must slow down. Jackson County Sheriff Shawn Haken stated that According to the most recent DOT traffic volume studies, MN 60 has almost as much daily traffic on it as does I-90. They both have around 7,000 to 8,000 vehicles on it per day. In Windom, it’s even higher with approximately 11,000. Sheriff Haken went onto say When you combine that volume of traffic, along with an increase in higher speeds by motorists and we see vehicles travelling at 90-100 on I-90 and MN 60 every day, it creates a dangerous situation for anyone working on the side of the road…..or someone parked on the shoulder with vehicle issues.” The Ted Foss Move Over Law isn’t just a traffic regulation, it’s a reflection of our shared responsibility on the road. Slowing down, changing lanes, and paying attention can make the difference between life and death for emergency workers and everyday drivers alike. For more information, visit the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s page on the Ted Foss Move Over Law. Plain and simple be Courtesy, Be Aware, and Always look out for those on the side of the road so that Everyone can get from Point A to Point B safely and everyone will live another day to share memories of that one time we took a trip!
