Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reported 88 calls from August 24th to August 31st. Highlights included a tractor that was destroyed by fire, credit card fraud involving the purchase of seven Valleyfair tickets, and several DWI arrests. Deputies also investigated an abandoned vehicle connected to a high-speed pursuit. The suspected driver fled into a cornfield, prompting an extensive search involving K-9 units and drones. Other calls included pills scattered along about a half-mile of roadway, sick raccoons, vehicle and property complaints, and a counterfeit $20 bill. Deputies also responded to a crash where an SUV struck a bridge and ended up in a river. The driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The Windom Police Department submitted their August 2026 Monthly Crime Report. They had 13 Adult Arrests, 2 Juvenile Arrests and served 5 Warrants with a total of 549 Calls for Service for the month. There were 9 Accidents with 1 injury and 8 DUI/Underage Drink/Drive. Windom Police Officers issued a total of 173 Traffic Violations and Warnings for the month of August. August Weather Stats 9/3/26
The monthly weather statistics have been reported for the city of Windom in August. The information is compiled by Dave Fjeld, a local weather observer and reported to the National Weather Service Office in Sioux Falls. The high temperature for the month was 94 degrees on August 31st. The average high for the month was 81.4 degrees. The low temperature for August was 52 degrees on August 23rd. We received just one and ninety-one hundredths of an inch of precipitation for the month compared to four and twenty-seven hundredths of an inch in 2025. For the year we have received 17 and a half inches which is 3 inches behind last year.

The Windom City Council discussed Tuesday Night the issue of how the city will handle cash transactions as the availability of pennies continues to decline. City Administrator Steve Nasby explained the proposed policy would affect cash payments only. Payments made by check or credit card will continue to be processed for the exact amount. Under the plan, cash transactions would be rounded to the nearest nickel. Amounts ending in one or two cents would round down, while three or four cents would round up. The same process would apply on the other side of the nickel. For utility bills, customers would still receive a bill showing the exact amount owed. Any difference created when paying cash would be carried forward as a small credit or additional amount on the customer’s next bill so city accounts can continue to balance to the penny. Councilmembers questioned how the change would affect accounting procedures and how frequently cash and pennies are currently used at City Hall and the Windom Municipal Liquor Store. Nasby said the liquor store currently goes through approximately five to ten dollars in pennies each week, while cash use for utility payments is believed to be considerably lower. Nasby said the November 1st implementation date will give the city’s software vendors time to make necessary adjustments. The council agreed to move forward with implementing penny rounding for cash transactions beginning November 1st.

Wowzers… what a week. I don’t know about you, but I am bushed. I feel like I couldn’t catch myself coming or going. From marathon meetings to our End of Summer Barbeque, appointments in Sioux Falls, end-of-the-month accounting, the start of school and sports seasons… it has been a constant state of movement. And somewhere in the middle of all that craziness, something happened that stopped me in my tracks. The station received a thank-you note signed by so many people. Tucked inside was another little card with just two words: YOU MATTER. Two simple words. But wow… did they hit my heart. Our End of Summer Barbeque was supposed to be our way of thanking you. Thanking our loyal listeners, our clients, our friends and this community for continuing to support local businesses and local radio. But somehow, you turned it around on us. You gave us a gift we didn’t even know we needed, a little confirmation that what we do matters, that the long days matter, and that the people we get to do it for matter even more. It made me wonder… how much better would the world be if everyone got a little card once in a while that simply said, YOU MATTER… Because you do. So from each of us at KDOM, to each of you — thank you. Thank you for the kindness you extend to us, for showing up, for listening, for laughing with us, for supporting our advertisers, and for continuing to believe in local radio.
