The Windom Ambulance Service is making key operational upgrades. Ambulance Director Kristen Porath announced the service is switching billing vendors, as the current provider is phasing out. After research, the city has chosen EMS|MC, a national company that already works with several services in Minnesota. The new platform will offer better access to billing information and include a customer portal. Porath stated this will begin upon final review by the City Attorney. Porath also stated the department is looking to replace the department’s aging radio system. Porath went onto say the current radios are over 10 years old and difficult to maintain. The new equipment includes $3,000 in programming from Alpha Wireless and $119,000 in radios from Motorola, with future encryption capability if required by the state. According to Porath, thanks to one-time state EMS funding, the project will be fully covered. Porath noted the new radios are expected to last 7 to 10 years, with manufacturer support for at least five years after the model is retired. Porath also shared that the department is moving forward with technology upgrades, including improvements to iPads, cell phones, and Wi-Fi connectivity—enhancing communication and efficiency in the field. The Windom Ambulance Department is being recognized at the state level. The department received a State Award for Clinical Excellence—an honor given to EMS services that meet or exceed 80% on key performance measures set by the State of Minnesota.

There’s going to be some big changes coming to Island Park starting this week in Windom. Jon Ketzenberg, Supervisor of the Windom City Street Department, says construction will be starting shortly, with demolition of the old Island Park Shelter and new development happening in the park later this summer. Crews will be removing the old shelter, some trees and preparing the area in preparation for a brand-new shelter that will sit atop the berm and the actual berm that will help protect the community during flooding seasons. In addition, water and sewer lines are being installed for the new shelter. Despite the activity, Ketzenberg says Island Park will remain open throughout the project. Baseball is definitely on the schedule for this summer and will be ready for football games if they resume again down at Island Park. As for the popular dog park, it will continue to be available to the public until work prohibits it. While the Parks and Recreation Commission are deciding whether it will stay in the same location in Island Park, Ketzenberg assures that the total space for the dog park will not be reduced. Construction is expected to start this week and continue over the coming months.
