It’s National AG Week which is celebrated March 21st – 27th! This week celebrates and acknowledges the agricultural industry and the role it plays in stabilizing the economy. Agriculture is the biggest food contributor in America and America is the net exporter of food, which means that this industry is a source of food and wealth. In 1820 The House of Representatives created an Agricultural Committee in the United States. In 1862 The United States Department of Agriculture, also known as the Peoples Department, was formed by President Abraham Lincoln. In 1973 leaders of agriculture in America united and created a council to support and spread awareness of the vitality of agriculture and the first National Agriculture Day was introduced developing into an entire week-long celebration. KDOM is celebrating along side our local and national people and businesses in Agriculture. We salute all those that continue to care for, raise, and create in the agriculture world.

An update came from the DNR regarding the EagleCam nest. Currently the nest is out of camera range and it is believed that high winds might have impacted the camera, and the view of the nest has been obstructed by the tree trunk where the camera is mounted. It has become impossible to maneuver the camera. When DNR Staff investigated the camera was still secured and appeared undamaged but did notice one of the eagles in the alternate nest, still incubating the eggs.  Out of an abundance of caution for the actively incubating eagle pair and their eggs, it was decided to not relocate the camera or adjust its current position due to the risk of disturbing the birds during the most sensitive time in their breeding season. According to the DNR, this EagleCam season has not turned out the way anyone had hoped. Instead, it has become a sneak preview of sorts–a promise for what is to come as they settle in with this new location and pair of eagles. The camera will stay on for now, focused on the same group of trees where the pair is nesting, as it might catch glimpses of the pair coming and going. When the breeding season concludes, they will troubleshoot the camera set up and placement in hopes of providing a better EagleCam experience next season. Meanwhile, there is an exciting alternative for wildlife watchers: the FalconCam season is just beginning. A pair of peregrine falcons has been observed in the downtown Saint Paul nest box, displaying courtship behaviors, as they enter their breeding season. You can watch the FalconCam at mndnr.gov/falconcam.
