The Windom City Council continued their cannabis discussion during their meeting Tuesday. Council members gave an update that during the Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners meeting that was before the city council Tuesday, that the county is willing to take responsibility on what the legislation or licensing would be for cannabis products once the new Minnesota state cannabis law takes effect on August 1st.

At their last city meeting, Windom council members thought about adopting their own cannabis ordinance, but since the county decided to take initiative on adopting county cannabis legislation, council member jenny Quade said maybe the city should wait until they see what the county does first…

A question was asked if the city would have any additional liability if the city didn’t make a cannabis ordinance right way, Windom City Administrator Steve Nasby said no…

Nasby did note that if the city does make a cannabis ordinance either now or in the future, then the city would have additional liability because they have now actively engaged with the law.

Mayor Dominic Jones asked Windom Chief of Police Scott Peterson what he thought the city should do. Peterson said he supports the wait and see approach…

A motion for the city of Windom to take no action on cannabis legislation was requested and approved at the end of the cannabis law discussion during the Windom City Council meeting.


The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners during their meeting Tuesday agreed to form an ad hoc committee to form legislation and licensing regulations for cannabis in the county. On this committee will be commissioners Larry Anderson and Donna Gravely, Cottonwood County Sherriff Jason Purrington, and Cottonwood County Attorney Nick Anderson. Once this new county cannabis ad hoc committee has any details on how to proceed or learns of new information, they will present that information to the Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners.


During the Murray County Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday, the commission received a ditch inspection report. As part of that discussion, commissioners wondered if it was ok for the public to do their own ditch work without consulting the county. Murray County Attorney Travis Smith said that’s not advised…

Residents are encouraged to contact Murray County so the drainage authority can come out and review the ditch and any work that may need to be done so there’s an official record on file.


Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office reported 54 calls in the week of June 12th to June 18th. Deputies conducted 8 Civil Processes, 5 animal calls, had 5 Directed Patrols, and 4 public assists.

Mountain Lake Police reported on June 19th they took a report of a theft of some yard chains, on June 13th an officer handled a juvenile shoplifting, and on June 11th, Mountain Lake Police took a report of a vehicle backing in some mailboxes-the party agreed to pay for damage.
