An air quality alert for central and southern Minnesota started yesterday afternoon and is in effect until Thursday, June 22, at 9 p.m.

In our area, we’re expected to be in the orange air quality index, which is a level of air quality that is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. Symptoms for those in the sensitive group may include chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and fatigue. Folks should limit outdoor physical activity, take frequent breaks, and those with asthma are encouraged to have their inhaler nearby.

As part of the air quality alert, central and southern parts of Minnesota are under moderate fire danger meaning fires can start easily and spread at a moderate rate.

Windom Fire Chief Ben Derickson says it’s probably not a good idea to have open fires…

Derickson says right now there aren’t any burn bans in place, but it’s not something he suggests doing while under the air quality alert.
