There is one less visual proof of the Flood in Windom as the sandbags have been removed. According to Cottonwood County Emergency Management Director Paul Johnson, all the sand bags should have been picked up yesterday. This was the goal to do it all in one day. With the help from neighboring communities that included the Cities of Redwood Falls, Mountain Lake, Worthington, Marshall and Windom and Snowy River Hauling & Grading Contractor (formerly Peterson-Smith Gravel which was purchased by Colin & Tyler Bennett) the pick up went as smooth as they anticipated. When asked about where all the sand would be going, Johnson stated, “The sand does go to the landfill.  It’s my understanding that the landfill doesn’t just dump the sand alongside the garbage though, they do use the sand as cover, so garbage doesn’t blow away.  So, in a way, it is recycled.  It isn’t cleaned, but the landfill is lined with a clay liner so any contaminants that leach out stay in the landfill cell.”  If your sandbags did not get picked up yesterday, according to Cottonwood County Solid Waste Manager Kyle Pillatzki, the Landfill will be accepting sandbags out at the landfill for free until Wednesday, July 31st. But you are responsible for bringing them out to the landfill during regular business hours of Monday through Friday 8am to 4pm. If you have questions concerning your sandbags, you can call Assistant Solid Waste Manager Donna Stresemann at 507-831-3781. Johnson concluded with the sandbags he once again wanted to send out a huge thank to anyone who helped with this project, whether it was filling them, using equipment and fuel to fill and transport bags, setting them, feeding people, donating food/water/beverages, providing child supervision so people could help and lastly when the water receded picking up the bags and getting them to the curb.  The volunteer effort with this flood is something this entire city should be very proud of. And of course I must throw in my own two cents… It truly takes a village. It isn’t just one person that accomplishes or makes it all happen. I for one have seen so many people quietly doing their best to make a horrible situation better. People from all walks of life, young and old pitching in and doing everything within their means to help. THAT is what community is all about. And I have to give a shout out to our surrounding communities taking time, muscle and resources from their communities and pitching in to help. I am overwhelmed when I think of all the behind the scenes- time, energy, planning, decision making, and sheer will, that all of the City and County Administration, Employees, and elected officials put in. They get hammered a lot, but the truth is where would our cities and counties be without the commitment from all of them.

This Saturday, July 27th the First Annual Thunder for Freedom Motorcycle Fun Run and Celebration will be taking place in Mountain Lake. This family friendly event is to raise money and awareness to combat human trafficking.  Whether you are a biker or not. You are invited to hang out, ride a motorcycle, eat some good food, listen to some good music, worship the Lord. I loved a post, I read that said, You don’t go to church? No judgement here! We want you to join us. You don’t ride a motorcycle? Maybe you don’t even like motorcycles? No Judgement here! We want you to join us. ALL are welcome, no matter who you are. No matter what you are going through. No matter where you came from. You are Welcome at Thunder for Freedom. This event promises to be an uplifting and accepting dedication to combat Human Trafficking. There will be a silent auction with all proceeds going toward saving individuals from human trafficking and a really awesome Cycle Mate motorcycle trailer up for auction at the prize tent. The Band Outlaws for the Cross will be performing. Again this is a family friendly event so all ages are encouraged to attend. Registration for the fun run starts at 9:30am at the Mt Lake City Park with kickstands up at 11am. The run will be 150 miles, stopping at churches for rodeo games along the way, finishing back in Mountain Lake. – Cost for the run is $20. Family and friends who don’t ride can join in for food, concerts, games and fun at 4 PM at the Mountain Lake City Park with opportunities to donate through raffle tickets and other options. It is all summed up by Romans 15:32 “Then, by the will of God, I will be able to come to you with a joyful heart, and we will be an encouragement to each other.” Have fun be the difference and lets put an end to human trafficking. This Saturday in Mountain Lake. For additional information check out Thunder for Freedom on Facebook .
