Just a short recap… If you missed the program offered last night by the Minnesota Department of Corrections and Cottonwood County Probation, you missed a very informational talk on what is in plain sight but not seen. As I sat along with approximately 50 other people in the room, to National Speaker Jermaine Galloway I wished there were more parents and grandparents attending. I was astounded by the ease that children have to purchase drugs that alter feelings and mind. This isn’t just an epidemic for high schoolers, I learned that they are seeing 2nd Graders vaping or handing out drugs that look like candies at school. This is so scary to me when I think of my Sweet Henry who would be so excited to be at school and innocently be offered a gummy or candy that looks like a sweet tart. There is no doubt that he would take it and eat it without hesitation because number one he loves candy and number two his mind does not comprehend yet that there are things out in the world that could kill you in an instant or harm your mind and body. I’ve heard it before we live in a different world and until last night, I truly didn’t totally comprehend it because I always chalked it up to violence and social media… but there is a deadlier and more silent killer affecting our youth today. I believe our law enforcement officers have a more difficult job because of having their hands tied with the lack of laws to protect our youth. Did you know that a child under the age of 12 can waltz into a gas station or corner store and legally purchase products that contain CBD or THC. I never knew the concept of “The Hook” which means if they sell this, they probably sell that. It is everywhere!!! Even in something as simple as backpacks… My eyes have been opened and my heart just hurts for our youth today. As adults we must do better. We must be vigilant; we can’t think kids will be kids and experimenting is part of their journey. Because in today’s world kids aren’t just smoking or vaping Grandpas or Grandmas weed! They are, first time out of the gate, getting hit with a more concentrated higher dose of drugs. We are talking almost 90% higher in concentration. It’s not just street drugs either. Did you know that over the shelf products like Benadryl and Imodium can be used to create hallucinations and highs? AND you could potentially die from an overdose? It is happening folks right before our eyes, but we just don’t see it. I encourage you to educate yourself more. Become part of the solution instead of not knowing what is right in front of your eyes.
