Superintendent of Windom Area Schools released the following Press Release yesterday, it stated- A two year agreement has been reached between the Windom School Board and Education Minnesota, Windom (EMW). Several contractual items were discussed throughout the negotiations process.  Some of the highlights include a 4.85% increase in salary the first year, a 4.1% increase in the second year, an increase in the district’s contribution to health insurance, and three personal days for all teachers.  This equates to a 10.75% increase in total benefits and salary.

Typically, school employees do not receive 10%+ increases.  Historically, the total package agreements are in the 6-8% range for two-year contracts.  There are several factors that were considered this year.  First of all, inflation and the cost of living has affected all. Secondly, school districts received additional funding as a result of decisions made by the Minnesota legislature last spring.  This includes additional revenue on the basic formula as well as additional revenue in categorical aid such as special education cross-subsidy, library aid, and compensatory revenue.

“We were fortunate to be able to pass along a portion of the additional revenue to our staff while maintaining our commitment to fiscal responsibility,” said Frank.

“I appreciate the board members and EMW negotiators who spent hours discussing the contract terms and identifying solutions that met the goals of both parties. Contract negotiations are a vital part of maintaining our local education system, and require healthy conflict, understanding, and stamina. I’m pleased that we were able to come to an agreement while maintaining good relationships throughout the process.”
