The Windom City Council has greenlit two community initiatives following their meeting last week, ensuring both local river safety and a long-standing patriotic tradition remain active this summer. First, the council approved a renewal with the U.S. Geological Survey to keep the Des Moines River gauge up and running. City Administrator Steve Nasby says the total local cost of nearly 30-thousand dollars will be split among area partners, including Cottonwood County Emergency Management and the Windom Water Department, with the federal government matching funds for upkeep. Meanwhile, Tegels Park will play host to a solemn ceremony next month. The council granted permission to the American Legion to hold an unserviceable flag ceremony on Flag Day, Sunday, June 14th at noon. The traditional retirement ceremony will involve a small, controlled flame, and the Windom Fire Department will be on-site to ensure the event runs safely.
