The Lakefield Police Department is taking another step to keep the community safe. Lakefield Chief of Police, Roger Pohlman says a new drug disposal box has been installed at the Lakefield Police Department. Residents are encouraged to clean out their medicine cabinets and safely get rid of any unused or expired prescriptions. Unused medications can sometimes end up in the wrong hands, and this new drop box provides a simple, secure way to prevent that. If climbing the steps to the Police Department is a challenge, residents can use the front entrance of City Hall, walk through the building, and exit out the back. The department thanks everyone for doing their part to keep Lakefield a safe and healthy community.

Cottonwood County property owners are being reminded that the deadline to pay the second half of their real estate taxes is quickly approaching. County Auditor/Treasurer Carolyn Rempel says all payments must be paid or postmarked by Wednesday, October 15th to avoid penalties. The penalty schedule can be found on the back of each tax statement. Residents are asked to include their payment stub when submitting payment. The Auditor/Treasurer’s Office is open during regular business hours, and for convenience, a temporary drop box has been installed on the northeast corner of the courthouse. Payments can also be made online or by calling the office at 507- 831-1905 for additional options. Again, Rempel reminds taxpayers that payments need to be made or postmarked no later than October 15th to avoid late fees.

This week marks Fire Prevention Week, observed nationwide each October during the week that includes October 9. The campaign dates back to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and was first proclaimed in 1925 by President Calvin Coolidge. Throughout our listening area, local fire departments and volunteers are joining the effort to raise awareness about fire safety at home and outdoors. Many departments will visit schools, host open houses, or share fire-safety demonstrations, so residents are encouraged to watch for local events in their community. This year’s national theme is “Charge into Fire Safety”, focusing on the safe use of lithium-ion batteries in phones, tools, and e-bikes. Firefighters remind everyone to check smoke alarms, review home escape plans, and use care when charging devices, remember to never charge on soft surfaces. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is also emphasizing wildfire prevention this week. While most wildfires occur in the spring, fall conditions with dry grass, leaves, and wind can make fires spread fast. The DNR urges Minnesotans to keep campfires small, delay debris burning until snow cover, and avoid parking vehicles on tall grass. From homes to fields, firefighters across the region remind everyone that fire safety starts with awareness and a few small steps today can help prevent tragedies tomorrow.
