The Jeffers City Council met on the 14th, addressing a range of local issues from public safety to park maintenance. Council members learned that a First Responder training will be offered this fall by the Lamberton Ambulance Service, with more details expected soon. A discussion was held on enforcement of the county’s Waste Tire Ordinance, noting that a letter has been sent to a local business to ensure compliance. A building permit to cement a patio and driveway was approved, and maintenance staff will be contacting residents about trimming overgrown vegetation in alleyways to keep them clear and accessible. Concerns over vandalism at the city park were also raised, after damage was reported to a slide and climbing equipment. Witnesses were present during the incident. The city plans to report the vandalism to the Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Department, send a letter to residents, and consider installing surveillance cameras in the park. In other business, the council discussed the possible sale of an old fire truck after receiving interest from a buyer. Procedures for listing the vehicle will be reviewed.

Highway 4, from just south of Sleepy Eye to Brown County Road 24, reopened to traffic this on  July 19th. This section of the highway has been closed since late May to allow MnDOT’s contractor to complete finishing work near the Cottonwood River bridge, as part of the larger Highway 4 improvement project between St. James and Sleepy Eye, which began last year. According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, although the highway has reopened, some detour signage will remain in place until it is removed in this next week and motorists may still see some intermittent lane closers as crews continue to complete final work on the project.

The Highway 4 project between St. James to Sleepy Eye included resurfacing approximately 25 miles of roadway and replacing three bridges, along with other roadway and drainage improvements. These improvements have allowed Highway 4 between St. James and Sleepy Eye to be designated a 10-ton route.
