The Windom City Council met on Tuesday and it was packed with a full agenda of action items that I will be covering over the next few days. The Council made history Tuesday night by approving a 3.2% on-sale liquor license for the Windom Baseball Association this is a first that such a license has been granted in the city’s history. The license allows alcohol sales during Windom Pirates baseball games at the ballpark concession stand. However, no alcohol will be sold during high school games, and any alcohol on-site will be covered and secured during those events. City officials confirmed the license approval was in compliance with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division. The license is valid from May 15th through the end of the year. Association president James Garrison submitted the application on behalf of the organization, and the Windom Police Department certified that there were no recent liquor law violations connected to the applicant. This decision marks a new era for community events at Island Park while maintaining clear boundaries for youth activities. Alcohol Beverages will only be allowed within the fence of the ballpark and will be open for compliance checks. The Windom City Council then passed a resolution accepting a generous donation to the Windom Municipal Airport. Lorri Cole, a long-time supporter of the city, donated $350 in memory of her father, John Loken. The donation will be used to repaint the interior of the Arrival and Departure building at the airport. Cole also offered her time and labor to help with the project. In other city news, the Windom Public Library will be closed on Saturdays this summer. The Library Board recommended the temporary closures due to ongoing staffing shortages. Only two regular employees remain after a recent resignation, and the library is relying on on-call staff and volunteers to stay operational. The Saturday closures will begin Memorial Day weekend and continue through Labor Day. Councilwoman Jenny Quade expressed mixed feelings, noting the difficulty of the situation and adding that with the pool also not opening, it’s another hard hit for families in the community. This closure is approved for 2025 only at this time.

It’s the start of Memorial Day Weekend. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I come from a strong line of dedicated military men and women! My family has representation for Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Marines. How absolute proud am I of my Country and truly grateful to all those that have served and gave the ultimate sacrifice. I know it is the kickoff to summer barbeques and fun but please take a moment and give thanks for our Veterans that are no longer with us. For without them we would not have this auspicious weekend. Talking about celebrations brings today is National Carb Day… I know there are those of you that don’t do carbs but this day was made for me and my grands. CARBS are the bomb and I will be enjoying a bread stick and some noodles today… Just for the joy of it. I thought last year we wouldn’t be celebrating Lucky Penny Day but hey we have another year of celebration!! Three cheers for the penny. May it never go away…
