In the Windom City Council meeting on Tuesday, which was following the powerful storm that tore through the area on Monday, May 19th. The Council recognized and thanked the hard-working Street and Electric Department crews who worked tirelessly through the night and into the next day to restore safety and services. Council Members discussed and approved the cleanup plan for storm debris. Windom residents are asked to bring only tree and bush debris caused by this storm to the boulevard, no garbage or unrelated materials. Branches must be cut to no more than 6 to 8 feet in length and placed curbside by 7 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27th. Importantly, no debris should be placed in alleys, and this cleanup service is available only to Windom city residents. For those who prefer to dispose of debris earlier, you can take it to the Cottonwood County Landfill at 43979 County Highway 22 in Windom. Residents are responsible for all landfill costs.

Fees are:

  • $5 per pickup load
  • $10 per trailer load
  • $20 for larger loads like side dumps.

The historic log cabin in Island Park has officially found a new home and it’s headed back to where it began. The Windom City Council has approved the sale of the aging structure to the Fort Belmont Historical Society in Jackson for just one dollar. John Ketzenberg, Windom’s Streets and Parks Superintendent, first shared news of interest from Fort Belmont earlier this month, after receiving an email from Ken Kruse of the Fort Belmont Society. Since then, a letter of intent has been signed, and plans are now underway to relocate the cabin back to Jackson County. The cabin, previously marked for removal or demolition due to safety concerns, was designated as surplus property by the City. In lieu of tearing it down, the Council opted for preservation through a negotiated sale to the nonprofit group. City Administrator Steve Nasby presented the finalized agreement. The City also agreed to contribute up to $2,500 toward moving costs with it being moved no later than August 1st to complete the relocation. During Tuesday Nights Windom City Council meeting, Council Member Jayeson Sherman expressed gratitude that the cabin will be preserved and thanked Ketzenberg for his efforts and Council Member Benson emphasized the significance of the save, noting that the cabin had come dangerously close to demolition before the preservation plan came together. Now, with a move in motion and funding support in place, the cabin is on track to return to its roots and its history will live on in Jackson County.
