Meetings Today:

  • The Windom Area School Board will hold a Special Board Meeting at 5:30 PM, in the Windom City Council Chambers. The board is expected to take action to approve the resolution canvassing the returns from the recent special election. This meeting can be attended in person or meeting can be viewed on YouTube at Media SB22.
  • Red Rock Central School District Board of Education at 5pm in Lamberton.

Windom Police Department reported an officer was approached at the Law Enforcement Center on the 12th at 3:52am by a Windom male to report his 15-year-old son as a runaway. The Juvenile was found on the 16th at 6:42pm in Heron Lake and brought back to Windom for his family to pick up at the Law Enforcement Center. On the 18th an officer was dispatched to the 1400 block of 17th Street for a report of a juvenile female runaway. The Juvenile was found at 7:20pm the same evening. On the 19th at 9:46am, officers responded to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 60 and 13th Street. A 2003 Ford F-150 pickup was traveling south when a 2014 Chrysler Town N Country Van was also traveling south and attempted to make a right hand turn into 13th Street. The Ford was behind the Van and was unable to stop or move out of the way and collided with the Van, no injuries were reported.

It’s poppy distribution time in Windom! The Windom American Legion Auxiliary is inviting the community to wear a red poppy a small symbol of a great sacrifice to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives defending our freedoms. Volunteers will be at HyVee in Windom from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and tomorrow handing out poppies. The official National Poppy Day is on May 23rd, so be sure to wear one and remember. The Auxiliary has also announced winners of the 5th Annual Second Grade Poppy Coloring Contest. Congratulations to Charlotte Schichtl, Miciah Bennet, Bennett Walton, and Remedy Sayachack, who each took first place in their classes. Seventy-seven colorful entries were displayed in local businesses, and winners received ice cream cones, while all participants enjoyed cookies and a poppy bookmark, courtesy of the Legion Auxiliary. And in a special gesture, poppies were presented to residents at Windom’s care facilities including Sogge Home, Remick Ridge, Mickelsen, and the Pine View Assisted Living facilities as a heartfelt tribute.

The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday, taking action on a variety of items including staffing approvals, policy revisions, and legal representation for an ongoing environmental appeal. The Board approved the amended agenda and declared Unit 781, a trailer, along with other miscellaneous items, as surplus property, clearing the way for potential sale or disposal. In personnel matters, the Board approved all hiring and permanent status changes for county employees, upon successful completion of hiring requirements. Commissioners also authorized a clothing allowance of $500 for the Building Operations Manager and $250 for the Courthouse Building & Grounds Worker. In response to recommendations from the State Auditor, the Board approved adding “Suspension and Debarment” language to the county’s Procurement Policy. The revised policy will be posted for a 30-day public comment period. The Board also approved hiring the law firm Squires, Waldspurger & Mace, P.A., or another qualified firm, to represent the county in the Sioux Rock Quarry expansion Environmental Assessment Worksheet (EAW) appeal.

Several Memorial Day Programs are set for Monday, May 26th. The Windom American Legion Post 206 will hold its annual Memorial Day Program at 10:30 a.m. at the Windom Community Center. Commander Dave Cory was in studio and stated the program includes music by the Windom Chordhustlers, remarks from Boys and Girls State representatives Tyler Maras and Karen Lopez, and a keynote by Retired Lt. Col. Susan Barons of the Minnesota Air National Guard. Memorial services will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, including an Honor Guard salute and a brief message. Cory went onto say this Memorial Program is sponsored by Bank Midwest and the event also includes support from the Legion Auxiliary and Windom Legion Baseball Team.
