TODAY is the day that the first half of real estate taxes are due and must be postmarked on or before TODAY, May 15th so you don’t incur a late penalty.  You can find penalty information on the reverse side of your tax statement for late payments. The Cottonwood County Auditor/Treasurer’s Office requests to please include your payment stub when making payments.  Payments can be mailed to 900 3rd Avenue in Windom (Check with Post Office if they will be postmarked with today’s date) or you can drop off payments at the auditor/treasurer office or in the Dropbox on the northeast corner of the courthouse.  For more information call 507-831-1905.

Mountain Lake Police reported 34 calls in the week of May 5th to May 11th . Officers conducted several traffic stops, responded to a report of someone shooting a firearm in city limits near school, were called out for HEAT Team Deployment and assisted Mt. Windom Police Department reported on the 12th at 2:48pm an officer was informed about a driving complaint. The officer located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop on River Road. After investigation, a 56-year-old Windom male was charged with Violation of License Restriction; holding a driver’s license which is restricted to allow no use of alcohol or controlled substances, drove, operated or was in physical control of a vehicle in violation of restrictions. The male is also charged with an Ignition Interlock Violation for being in physical control of a motor vehicle that was not equipped with a functioning ignition interlock device.

The Windom Economic Development Authority of Windom met on Monday. Key highlights from the meeting included:

  • EDA Director Hiring: The application period for the new EDA Director closed at 5 p.m. Monday. President Nancy Wepplo will help the Personnel Committee review applicants, with a decision expected in June.
  • Windom Apartments Update: City officials met with the developer on April 15. Final occupancy certificates are in for five of the six buildings, with the last one expected by the end of May. At least 28 apartments are already rented. A final funding draw from the state must be submitted before June 30.
  • Premium Iowa Pork: The City is preparing documents to allocate $1 million in state funds to Premium Iowa Pork, following HyLife Foods’ closure. Some plant operations, like grinding, have already begun.
  • 801 Fourth Avenue Renovation: The Board approved two loans up to $10,000 for interior remodeling and up to $3,000 for exterior improvements aimed at turning the space into a beauty salon. Half of each loan is forgivable if ownership is maintained over five years.
  • Other Business: The Board discussed a special meeting to finalize documents for Premium Iowa Pork. City Administrator Nasby also updated members on HyLife’s bankruptcy and confirmed MnDOT will install new speed signs.
