The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Sioux Falls SD in cooperation with emergency management from Cottonwood and Jackson Counties will be holding a severe weather awareness and spotter class covering topics on National Weather Service products and services, weather safety, severe weather fundamentals and how to communicate reports to the local NWS offices in the event of severe weather. This Awareness and Spotter Class will take place on April 10th at 6:30pm in Room Y101 at Minnesota West Community and Technical College which is located at 401 West Street in Jackson. The class is free for anyone interested and there is no need to pre-register.

The Cottonwood County Historical Society will be holding an open house and reception this Sunday, March 30th from 2pm-4pm to introduce the Cottonwood County Student Art Show that runs through April 26th. This Show will feature works from students from Mountain Lake Public, Mountain Lake Christian, Red Rock Central , Westbrook-Walnut Grove and Windom Area Schools. The show will feature more than 40 works of art from a wide variety of mixed media. This event is open and free to the public.

Motorists traveling on Highway 60 near Heron Lake may see smoke from crews conducting a prescribed burn on Thursday, March 27, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The controlled burn will be conducted at the intersection of Highway 60 and Jackson County Road 9 near Heron Lake. Motorists will encounter signs as they approach the burn area warning of the potential of smoke. Motorists should be attentive, slow down, and watch for the burn crew, who are monitoring these efforts. There is no need for motorists to call the fire department when they see a prescribed burn that’s being attended to by a burn crew. Prescribed burns are scheduled during optimal weather conditions to ensure safety and effectiveness.
MnDOT performs the prescribed burning of grassland vegetation along many roadsides, which provides for optimal vegetation health. Healthy roadside vegetation provides safer clear zones, stabilizes soil, conveys runoff, and treats stormwater runoff. Healthy roadside vegetation also provides additional benefits such as preserving populations of rare species and making roadsides more attractive. Fire also promotes tall native grasses and forbs that trap blowing snow and prevent it from drifting across the road. Native prairie vegetation is planted along highway right of way to reduce the amount of mowing needed.
Work zone safety tips:
- Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
- Drive undistracted. Avoid using phones, mobile devices, adjusting the radio – even eating – while in work zones.
- Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.

- Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
- Avoid making unnecessary lane changes.
- Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
- Expect work zones to constantly change. Day to day you could experience lane shifts, closures, narrower lanes, moving workers and vehicles.
