The Windom City Council met on Tuesday. According to Councilwoman Jenny Quade Fire Department elections ratification warranted Ben Derickson as Chief, Darren Tietz 1st Assistant, Jason Krumwiede 2nd Assistance and 3rd Assistant Kristen Porath. The Council approved a feasibility study on a 2025 Street Improvement Project for the 800 Block Alleyway between 3rd and 4th Avenue and 1000 Block between 3rd Ave and 5th Ave which according to Quade is the alleys and lots by the DAC, behind Shannon Lynn’s Floral & Boutique and by Plaza Jalisco. Quade stated that the big news is that the City and Department of Transportation District 7 Federal Grant that the council applied for in the Fall of 2024 for a roundabout at the KwikTrip end of town was Approved! Quade stated that it was a $500,000 federal grant and now they have to wait on DOT for timing, but Quade was adamant this is a big positive step forward.

It’s been a lot of fun to take a tour of Windom Area Health’s new building. We landed on the 1st Floor, which will be the Sanford Clinic.  The Sanford Clinic has plans to move from their current location next to Lewis Drug. This clinic will have two procedure rooms along with a Nurses Station, reception and waiting area for the clinic, along with patient exam rooms. Sanford contributed to the design plans, and they will have their own signage that will be more their brand than Windom Area Health. The move and timing for the Sanford Clinic is currently being planned and may be different from Windom Area Health’s timing on the new building.  And last, but not least, the parking lot will be expanded on the North/West sides. Additional spaces will be added as well as opportunity for improved traffic flow. I can hardly wait for the public open house being planned to bring all the spaces, floors, and designs together in the completed project!

I do want to answer a couple of questions that were presented throughout my Radio Tour!!! I best thought to go right to the source of information. For all the people that weren’t living in Windom when the whole Hospital and City agreement was made and have heard conflicting information, Windom City Administrator Steve Nasby stated, “The City of Windom owns the land and buildings.  Windom Area Health has a Governing Board that is appointed by the City Council to oversee the hospital with the powers granted to them in the City Charter.  The Windom Area Health Board has contracted with Sanford for many years to manage the hospital operations.  Nasby went onto say, “there are no local property tax funds that go to the hospital as it is an enterprise fund a business activity like electric, water, sewer, liquor who generate income to support their operations\projects.” Nasby then went on to clarify that Windom Area Health employees are City and the CEO; Shelby Medina is a Sanford employee. The doctors are a mix of Windom Area Health, Sanford and Independent.  The First Floor of the new Medical Building will once again be a Sanford Clinic, and they will rent space from Windom Area Health as do other providers that use the Out-Patient Space at the Main Entrance. The biggest comment I have been contacted about is the cost and how it is the taxpayer’s money, but it is important to know, there were no taxpayer dollars involved in the construction of the new building project. Windom Area Health’s Governing Board has made sound financial decisions and investments over the past several years and will be financing the project in full. If you have further questions, please feel free to reach out. I’d be happy to put you into contact with the people that have all the answers!
