Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office reported 35 calls in the week of February 11th to February 17th. Deputies conducted 14 Civil Processes, Handled 2 Disturbance calls, had 2 Motorist Assists, conducted 4Traffic Stops and had 3 Animal Calls. Windom Police Department reported a no-injury accident in the HyVee parking lot on the 16th.  Both cars sustained minimal damage. On the 18th at approximately 9:46pm an officer observed a vehicle driving on 8th Street belonging to a Windom Female who was known to have a driving status of Revoked. During the traffic stop, the female hopped back into the driver’s seat and drove off. After a pursuit with the vehicle, the suspect stopped on Buckwheat Avenue and ran towards a house. An Arrest was made of a 23-year-old Windom Female for 2 counts of 4th Degree Assault on a Peace Officer and Fleeing a Peace Officer in a Motor Vehicle. This case is being reviewed by the County Attorney’s Office.

Mountain Lake Police Department reported 13 calls from February 12th to the 17th. An officer handled a hit and run vs city light pole and two dogs at large. One dog was impounded at the Vet and the other the owner was cited for no dog license and dog at large. Officers issued 7 parking warning tickets, and an officer checked on a suspicious vehicle that was unoccupied but turned out to be okay. An officer checked on a report of a truck driver slumped over which he was just sleeping and everything was okay. Mt Lake Police assisted Wantanwan County Sheriff’s Office with an accident at the intersection of State Highway 30 and 640th Ave, Butterfield.

The Windom City Council met on the 20th. According to Councilwoman Jenny Quade the Council was honored to have Windom 4th Grade, Honorable Mention Recipient LMC Mayor For A Day Essay Contest participant Janette Cerda Juarez to read her essay and be presented a certificate from the Mayor. Janette was one of 500 essays received and she received 1 of 4 honorable mentions. MN DOT gave a presentation on the Highway 60/71 proposal. Quade stated, MN DOT will be present at the Windom Area Chamber of Commerce Farm and Home Show with plans on the project available for the public to view and ask questions about their upcoming 2025 Street Project. The Council discussed MN Cities Insurance Renewals with Josh Peterson of Bank Midwest. The Council Ratified the Fire Departments elections that include Chief Ben Derickson, 1st Asst: Jordan Bussa, 2nd Asst: Jason Krumwiede, 3rd Asst:  Kristen Porath. The Council was presented and reviewed the 2023 Annual Report. According to Quade, Citywide Cleanup Date has been set for Saturday, May 18th. Cleanup Day will follow the guidelines like last year, with a maximum of 10 bulky items allowed on your curb for pickup and a dropoff site from 7am-1pm at Tegels Park for all other items. Quade went on to say, the City will provide an $8 subsidy per mattress with a maximum of two mattresses per address.    There will be no electronics or appliance pick up but the County will be offering dates again for these recycling events.  The Mayor appointed Matt Miller to the Planning Commission.

The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday.  The Board accepted the low bid from Towne & Country Excavating, LLC in the amount of $ 190,602.30 for Project 017-599-114. The Commissioners then approved to move forward with the Victim Witnesss Coordinator position and a contract with Jackson County.  All positions were approved after successful completion of his probationary period. The Board accepted the resignation of County Attorney Nick Anderson effective March 12, 2024. The Board then approved to begin advertising for eight seasonal positions for the Public Works Department for the 2024 Summer Season.

The Ditch Authority in their meeting on the 20th moved to take off the JD #1 assessment and penalty on 2023 taxes and re-enter the JD #1 assessment payable for 2025, 26 and 27 at 3% for Ray Salzwedel and note that this is a non-precedent setting.
