The Weather may not seem it, BUT it is deer hunting season and the first Windom City Deer Hunt is under way. According to Windom Police Department, Sgt. Devin Kopperud who is coordinating this hunt, this is the first year that he is aware of for this particular exception for deer hunting within City Limits. Kopperud stated that there were 10 applicants for the hunt and eight completed the proficiency test which consisted of a total of 15 shots at three different set yardages. Those that completed the proficiency test were given permits and hunters are allowed to purchase two bonus tags for Does only. Kopperud went on to say as of now there is not plans to reopen the application but could be a possibility, this year being the first year it is a trial run and future hunts will be based on how this one turn out. Kopperud stated that there are two areas open for the hunt and they are Mayflower Park and the old landfill which is located off of County Road 13 behind Lakeview. Kopperud went onto say, the hunt will run the course of the archery season September 16th through December 31st and the hunters are responsible to tag their animal and register them with the DNR under the special hunt permit, there is also a sign in and sign out sheet for hunters which records when and where they hunted also if they were successful or not.

The City Deer Hunt is meant to reduce deer heard numbers and the city applied for a permit through the MN DNR which was then passed through the Windom City Council. Kopperud said the applicants are allowed to hunt with archery equipment which now with regulation changes includes crossbows. There have been a few hunters that have gone out and have seen deer, however none have been harvested at this time. Kopperud thought once the weather starts to cool down, there will be more hunters out. Each hunter has the opportunity to harvest two does which would be 16 total, with this year being the first year Kopperud stated he would like to see the hunt be a success and grow in the future.

The Palmer Bus Service according to Site Manager Kevin Heggeseth, will be implementing the Stop Finder System soon. Heggesth stated, “this will allow families to know the location of their bus. It is similar to the Life 360 app, but is specifically for your child’s route.  It will be helpful in the morning as the kids are getting ready for school and in afterschool as the bus drops students off. Heggeseth stated they are asking families to log into Skyward and make sure email addresses are correctly listed. Families should within the next week, receive an email from Palmer Bus be delivered to the primary family member listed in Skyward giving access to their route in the Stop Finder App. Heggeseth went on to say they are looking forward to the Stop Finder technology and hope that it is beneficial and convenient for everyone.
