The 144th annual Watonwan County Fair continues this weekend after starting on Tuesday. Those going to the fair have a special surprise this year! Pioneer Bank made a kind-hearted donation to the Watonwan County Fair, so they’ll be free admission to the main gate this year. Some events today include the tractor kade, swine show, 4H demonstrations, bingo, and the Fat City All Stars Band. During the regular Windom Area Schools Board of Education meeting on Monday, the board accepted multiple donations from the Remick Foundation. The Remick Foundation donated $88,000 for mental health services for 75% of a full-time position in mental health services, the second year of a two-year commitment of $11,700 for anti-bullying curriculum and speakers, and the second year of a two-year commitment of $46,835 to be used for a family and community engagement specialist.


Recently the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and University of Minnesota started conducting an ongoing wild bee survey. They’re collecting data about wild bees in the state and so far, they have found over 500 different species of bees in Minnesota. Cottonwood County Soil and Water Conservation District Program Technician Nathan Harder explains how… 

Harder says some of those bee species have some interesting names… 

Harder says the research is showing we need to maintain and improve bee habitats if we want to keep these pollinators in the state because some of them require specific plants to live. During the Windom City Council meeting last week, Windom Building & Zoning Official Andrew Spielman gave an update on changes to Ordinance No 196, 2nd Series – Land use Code Revision. Spielman explained changes made to the code and any language that was clarified to make it easier to understand or define in the Land Use Code Revision. At the end of his presentation, Spielman asked the Windom City Council for approval for the first reading of Ordinance No 196, 2nd Series – Land Use Revision. A motion was made and approved by the Windom City Council. A second reading will be made at the first Windom City Council meeting in August.
