Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reported on the 22nd at 5:37am A deputy responded to a report of a suspicious male on Industrial Parkway in Jackson.  They located a male who said he was homeless and was travelling along I-90 and had decided to sleep in the area for the night.  He said he was traveling eastbound across the country but had no destination. Deputies also dealt with a report of a school bus stop arm violation in Jackson and responded to a domestic disturbance in Jackson.

Bail was set for a 75-year-old from Alpha on Monday May 29th at his Court hearing. The District Court set Jake Lee Jones’ bail at $10,000 with conditions; or $40,000 without.  Jones posted the $10,000 on Monday and was released. Jones will be facing court charges of Count 1 Felony- Assault in the 2nd Degree with a Firearm- that can carry a maximum sentence of 7 years in prison and/or $14,000 fine and Count 2 Misdemeanor- Dangerous Weapons-Intentionally point a gun. Which can carry a maximum sentence of 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.  Charges stem from an incident on May 20th at approximately 8:52am when a Deputy received a report of an individual driving through an alley and pointing a pistol at someone in the City of Alpha. A witness stated Jones was identified as going through an alley really slow and pulling a trailer with something in his hand. When Jones accelerated with children in the area. The witness confronted Jones at his residence where he pointed a pistol at his face. The witness had recorded all of his interactions with Jones on his phone. Through investigation the Deputy identified a black semi-automatic pistol that was found to be loaded with one in the chamber, that Jones gave up without incident.

The Jeffers City Council met on Monday. Animal Control officer Olson was present to report that an anonymous city resident observed John Garritsen’s dog Bear outside without a muzzle. Garritsen’s dog has been deemed dangerous and is required to be muzzled anytime it is outside. The day that Olson visited Garritsen’s home to speak with him about this issue, Olson also observed the dog was outside without a muzzle. Olson presented documentation regarding the Minnesota State Statute for dangerous dogs. Olson reported that Garritsen is not compliant to the requirements as follows:

  • Dog must be muzzled when outside.
  • Dangerous dog permit fee must be paid annually.
  • Signs noting a dangerous dog is on the property.

The council assessed two fines to Garritsen in the amount of $100 to be paid along with the delinquent $150 dangerous dog permit by June 6, 2023, or the dog will be seized.

The Council voted to appoint Mike Schoper to fill the seat left by Jacob Barlow for the remaining term that expires 12/31/24. Lance Holmen, from Maintenance reported that the tennis court needs to be self-leveled and more crack filling done before pads can be added to make a pickleball court. After discussion, the Clerk will be checking with the City Attorney regarding an ongoing issue of ordinance non-compliance. A letter will be sent to a resident for garbage in their yard and non-mowing.

The Jackson Chamber has put out awareness that counterfeit money has been located around Jackson. It appears the money has been thrown around town an in parks. It was reported that one party attempted to pass one of the counterfeit bills at a Jackson Business. The Bills have “For Motion Picture Purpose” printed on the front and back of the bills. It was also stated that when using a counterfeit pen to check the bill, it will come up black. So beware and check your bills.
