Next week is the first day of school for most schools in our listening area. With school starting, Cottonwood County Sheriff, Jason Purrington wants to remind people to be extra attentive while driving and be aware of busses out and about transporting kids to and from school. Sheriff Purrington stated, The law says it is illegal — and very dangerous — to pass a stopped school bus when the large red lights located on top of the bus are flashing or the stop sign is extended. Flashing lights or the extended stop sign mean the bus is picking up or discharging students. You must stop whether you are approaching the school bus from the front or overtaking it from the rear. KDOM encourages everyone to be aware of children whether they are riding the bus, walking or riding their bikes.

KDOM would also like to thank everyone for all the monetary and school supplies that were donated for our 2nd Annual School Supply Drive. School Supplies will be distributed to area Elementary Schools and Windom Middle and High School. Our community truly is amazing.

Lutheran Social Services who distribute Meals on Wheels in Windom and Mt Lake have partnered up with Second Harvest and are now offering adults ages 18 to 59, healthy meals free of charge once a month for Cottonwood County. According to Regional Manager LSS Meals in Southwest Minnesota, Sarah Anderson at this time meals are being distributed at the Windom and Mountain Lake Community Centers. Anderson went onto say, Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota received a grant from Second Harvest Heartland to provide FREE meals to adults ages 18-59.  This age group was chosen because it doesn’t have access to meal programs through the schools or through Senior Dining, anyone 60 years+ can receive meals through Senior Dining. There will be a limited amount of meals for each site, once-a-month for distribution: 300 for Windom and 200 for Mountain Lake.  Each person will get a bundle of 10 meals, which are first come, first served.  Anderson further explained they can serve 30 people for the Windom distribution and 20 people for the Mountain Lake distribution. The distributions for Windom will be the 3rd Thursday of the Month and Mountain Lake will be on the 1st Thursday of the month through December at this time. Anderson stated they may be able to continue into the New Year pending on remaining grant funding. Other outlying areas offering this meal distribution are happening in Pipestone, Lake Benton and Ivanhoe.
