It’s Pluto Day!!! No… not Walt Disney’s dog, but the planet most of us grew up learning about as the 9th planet, first discovered in 1930- February 18th is the day dedicated to the most famous dwarf planet. In honor of Pluto Day I am going to share five favorite facts:

  • Pluto lost its planetary status in 2006 because it shares its orbit around the sun with objects called plutinos. (which interestingly are named after mythological creatures associated with the underworld)
  • Pluto is smaller than the Earth’s moon, measuring in at 1/6 of the moon’s mass and 1/3 of its volume.
  • Pluto has 5 moons
  • Pluto has an unusual orbit. Sometimes it is further from the Sun than Neptune and sometimes it is closer to the Sun than Neptune.
  • Pluto may have lost its Planetary status in 2006, but now some scientists are arguing that Pluto should be reinstated as a planet.
