Attorney General Keith Ellison announced today that Navient, known as one of the nation’s largest student loan servicers, will provide relief totaling $1.85 billion, including $14 million to Minnesota students, to resolve allegations of widespread unfair and deceptive student loan servicing practices and abuses in originating predatory student loans.

This settlement, joined by a coalition of 39 attorneys general, resolves claims that since 2009, despite representing that it would help borrowers find the best repayment options for them, Navient steered struggling student loan borrowers into costly long-term forbearances instead of counseling them about the benefits of more affordable income-driven repayment plans. The Settlement includes Significant Changes to Servicing and Lending Practices; $1.7 billion in debt cancellation and $95 million in restitution nationwide; and Additional Monetary payments Minnesota student loan borrowers will receive over $14 million in total financial relief.

What do Windom Area Health, the Windom Community Center and Life Saving Devices all have in common? In Windom, it is a donated AED- automated external defibrillator.  Windom has a lot of different opportunities available and one of those is the Windom Community Center located adjacent to the Cottonwood Lake. Spencer Winzenreid, Director of the Community Center stated that they have seen an increase of use of the facility in the past three years. There are many activities such as Winter Coed Volleyball Leagues, Youth Indoor Soccer, and Pickle Ball. You can walk indoors for free, and the Senior Center is located within the Community Center along with Senior Dining. This doesn’t even include all the other community events and celebrations that are held at the Center on weekends. According to Winzenreid, they have about 100 people walk in the door for the typical 7am- 4pm on most weekdays. On the weekends the Community Center can average about 300-500 people through community events being held. Health and Safety is one of the most important aspects of servicing the community and when it came to thinking of having a lifesaving AED- an automated external defibrillator in-house Winzenreid contacted Kim Armstrong, Executive Director of Compliance and Foundation/Auxiliary at Windom Area Health for assistance. Windom Area Health stepped up and donated this medical equipment that can assist in making the difference between life and death in mere moments.  The AED can increase the odds of survival for a person experiencing sudden cardiac arrest by 10%. The AED is a sophisticated yet easy to use medical device that can analyze the heart’s rhythm and if necessary, deliver an electrical shock or defibrillation to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. Both Winzenreid and Armstrong hope the AED won’t have to be used but it is a comfort to know it is available if needed. If you would like more information on the Windom Community Center, you can go online to windomcommunitycenter.com
