United Community Action Partnership is looking for volunteers for their Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (otherwise known as VITA) Tax Clinics. Tax Clinics will be starting up in the Windom, Jackson, Marshall, Willmar, Hutchinson, Redwood Falls and other “drop off sites” in January. Courtney Newgard, Family Services Specialist for Jackson and Windom stated that they are going into their 11th year for offering this IRS program in Windom and it is geared toward helping bring free tax preparation services to income eligible individuals and families.
Newgard went onto say that they are need of volunteers for the Windom and Jackson sites, we are required to use volunteers at our sites to remain in operation. There were a total of 430 Federal Returns prepared for the 2020 tax season between Windom and Jackson and 1,802 combined of all UCAP tax sites. Volunteers are offered free training that will be in January. Newgard stated that experience with taxes is not necessary, there are opportunities to volunteer that do not involve actually preparing the taxes- such as tax site assistants who welcome customers to the clinic and provide friendly customer service. Commitment usually is about once per week during the tax season. As an added bonus, Volunteers can also have their taxes prepared free of charge, regardless of their income. If you are interested in Volunteering this tax season or would like to get more information on this program, please contact UCAP at 507-828-1502.
