Federated Rural Electric has tripled its impact in the fight against hunger, distributing $30,000 to four local food shelves in Jackson and Martin Counties through matching funds from CoBank and Basin Electric Power Cooperative. Federated initially donated $5,000 per county, then secured matching dollars to bring the total contribution to $30,000. Half of the funding, $15,000 went to Heaven’s Table in Fairmont and Sherburn, while the remaining $15,000 was divided equally among food shelves in Heron Lake, Lakefield and Jackson, each receiving $5,000. According to Federated General Manager Scott Reimer, the donation reflects the cooperative’s commitment to helping local residents facing food insecurity. Heaven’s Table plans to use the funding to support its Backpack Program for school children and its Community Box food distribution program. Meanwhile, the Lakefield, Jackson and Heron Lake/Okabena food shelves say their donations will help purchase food, hygiene items, baby supplies and needed equipment to better serve area families. Federated serves approximately 5,300 electric members and 2,000 broadband subscribers across Jackson and Martin Counties.

As communities across the area pause to remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, several meaningful Memorial Day programs will take place Monday, May 25, offering residents an opportunity to honor those who served and reflect on the freedoms their sacrifices secured.
In Okabena, the Okabena American Legion and Auxiliary will begin the morning by presenting colors at area cemeteries, including Grace Lutheran Cemetery at 8:30 a.m., Old Rost St. Paul at 8:50 a.m., St. Paul Rost at 9:15 a.m., and St. John Cemetery at 9:40 a.m. A Memorial Day program will follow at 10 a.m. at the Legion Post Home, featuring guest speaker Roger Pohlman, retired First Lieutenant. Coffee and rolls will be served following the program, offering time for fellowship and remembrance.
In Windom, Windom American Legion Post 206 will host its annual Memorial Day program at 10:30 a.m. at the Windom Community Center, sponsored by Bank Midwest. The service will feature patriotic music by the Windom Chordhustlers, presentations from this year’s Girls Staters — Addison Spielman, Jeymee Rodas, and Marta Us Tomas — as well as remarks from local writer and speaker Tera Elness and the commander’s message. Following the indoor ceremony, attendees are invited to gather at Lakeview Cemetery for a traditional weapons salute in honor of fallen veterans.
Meanwhile, the Dundee community will come together for its annual Memorial Day observance beginning with coffee and rolls at 9:30 a.m. at the Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, followed by the program at 10:30 a.m. The featured Memorial Day address will be given by Cathy Ruesch. Graveside services at St. Mary’s Catholic and First Lutheran Cemeteries will follow. The Dundee Legion is also encouraging all veterans — including non-Legion members — to march alongside them in tribute to those who served.
Memorial Day is more than the unofficial start to summer — it is a sacred time to pause, gather, and remember the men and women who answered the call to serve and never returned home. Area residents are encouraged to attend a service, stand for a salute, and take a moment to honor the legacy of sacrifice that continues to shape our nation.
