University of Minnesota Extension’s Strategic Farming: Let’s Talk Crops! webinar series is helping farmers stay ahead of pests this growing season. During this week’s session, Extension educators discussed how winter weather affects overwintering pests and how degree-day models can help forecast crop development, insect emergence, and disease risk. Extremely cold and dry conditions can kill pests, but some like soybean aphids can survive temperatures near 30 degrees below zero thanks to natural antifreeze compounds in their bodies. Extension educator Anthony Hanson estimates soybean aphid winter mortality is around 5 percent so far this year, compared to 95 percent during the 2019 Polar Vortex, when temperatures dropped to 40 below zero in parts of Minnesota. Presenters also highlighted plans to expand the Minnesota Ag Weather Network in 2026, adding more weather stations to improve pest and crop forecasting tools statewide. The Strategic Farming webinar series runs through March. Recordings and registration information are available at www.z.umn.edu/strategic-farming
