January is National Radon Action Month, a nationwide effort led by the Environmental Protection Agency to raise awareness about radon, an invisible, odorless radioactive gas found naturally in the ground. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, and health officials say many people don’t realize they could be exposed right inside their own homes. According to Luke Ewald, Public Health Educator with Des Moines Valley Health and Human Services, winter is actually the best time to test for radon. With homes sealed up tight against the cold, elevated radon levels are easier to detect. Health officials encourage homeowners and renters alike to test and, if needed, take steps to reduce radon levels and consider radon-resistant building practices. Radon test kits are available locally. You can pick one up at Des Moines Valley Health and Human Services offices in Windom or Jackson, and KDOM also has a limited number of kits available for anyone interested. Ewald recently talked more about radon testing and health risks during an interview on Kaleidoscope. You can listen to that conversation by visiting windomradio.com, clicking on the Podcast tab, and selecting Kaleidoscope. Testing your home is simple and it could make a life-saving difference.
