Officers assisted other agencies with traffic calls and an accident, handled two separate animal calls- one involving a dog bite, and took a theft report that remains under investigation. The Windom Police Department reported 79 calls in the week of June 8th to June 14th. Officers handled 4 Citizen Complaints, 3 Animal Calls, dealt with 3 Harassment calls, 1 sexual assault and conducted 19 Traffic Stops. The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners met on the 17th. A resolution declaring a State of Emergency, Resolution 25-06-17, was passed by the board. Commissioners also approved the purchase of a cloud-based upgrade from Central Square for just over $72,500, which includes first-year maintenance. An additional $35,000 will cover second-year maintenance. The County Sheriff was authorized to sign the contract. Two employees from the county were moved to permanent part-time status with both having successfully completed their probationary periods. The commissioner then accepted the resignation of County Engineer Nick Klisch. His last working day will be July 25th, with a final termination date to be determined. And finally, a special board meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 23, at 1:30 p.m. to review an Interim Use Permit application from MN Paving & Materials.

The City of Windom has officially hired a new Economic Development Director. At its June 17th meeting, the Windom City Council approved the hiring of Sonya Wilt for the position. Wilt was selected from a pool of ten applicants, with four candidates interviewed by the hiring committee, made up of the City Council’s Personnel Committee and EDA Board Chair Nancy Wepplo. Wilt brings a wealth of experience to the role, including time as a small business owner, accounting professional, and municipal finance director. She is set to begin her duties on Monday, July 7th.

The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners held their annual Board of Appeal and Equalization meeting on Tuesday. As part of the meeting, several property assessments were reviewed. The board approved a $131,000 reduction in land value for parcel 13.035.0400, owned by Doug Lohse and others, following a re-evaluation of the land’s condition and usage. A second parcel, 15.002.0400, also owned by Lohse et al., saw a reduction of $184,200 for similar reasons. Meanwhile, the board voted to make no changes to the valuations of two other properties one owned by Sherri Janzen, and another by Michael Lohre and Irene Pintac Lohre. This meeting served as an opportunity for property owners to appeal the assessed value of their land.
