The 11th Annual Minnesota Municipal Beverage Association (MMBA) “Help Our Local Animals” Supplies Drive is underway at Windom’s Riverbend Liquor Store. According to Riverbend Liquor Store Manager John Nelson this is his 6th year that he has personally participated in this community involvement project with Cottonwood County Animal Rescue. Nelson went onto say that donations can be dropped off at the Liquor Store all month long, with the exception of the week April 18th to the 23rd when the store is closed for the installation of the new flooring. According to Nelson, either monetary or actual supplies for both dogs and cats are greatly appreciated, but for Cottonwood County Animal Rescue monetary donations work better as they can do more with it, by purchasing supplies they need, pay for vet bills, etc. But Nelson added they are in need of NurtiSource Cat an Kitten Food, Clumpable Cat Litter and New Fleece Blankets. Nelson also added that they will be having the 3rd Annual Pet Adoption Day on Saturday, April 13th from Noon to 2pm at the Riverbend Liquor Store. Cottonwood County Animal Rescue will be present with their pets available for adoption.  Nelson went onto say, if the weather cooperates the pets will be outside otherwise, they will have a space inside. The cool thing about adopting on the 13th, is the MMBA and Coors Light team up to sponsor 30 adoption reimbursements up to $100 through the state of Minnesota, so if you adopt a dog or cat from a local shelter, Riverbend can help try to get that reimbursement.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has four days each year where all Minnesota State Parks and State Recreation Areas offer free admission to everyone- no vehicle permits are needed. Coming up is the second free admission day. Saturday, April 27th. Minnesota state parks are open year-round, and there’s a state park within 30 miles of most Minnesotans. With a free day in each season, it’s a great opportunity to get out there and explore someplace new – or visit an old favorite at a new time of year! Whether you stay for the whole weekend or just spend a few hours outside, you’ll make memories that will last a lifetime.

The entrance fee waiver for fee-free days does not cover amenity or user fees for activities like camping, rentals, or special tours.

The goal is to encourage families to spend time together with a walk outdoors. Research shows that walking offers multiple benefits, from increased creativity and better brain function to more flexibility and stamina. So you won’t just burn calories, you’ll also improve your well-being.

There will be two more days in 2024 for free admission and they are set for Saturday June 8th and Friday November 29th.
