According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources a wildfire ignited north of Waseca around Noon on Sunday consuming more than 500 acres by late afternoon as it spread across fields and wetlands. Reports say it burned an estimated 1,000 acres before crews gained control Sunday Night.  In a statement from Leanne Langeberg, public information officer with the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center,  there were 12 fire departments that responded to the fire near Waseca, with support from both the DNR and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, two aerial planes were dispatched to lay down fire retardant, and a helicopter was on scene also. Sunday’s weather conditions prompted the first red flag warning of the year in Minnesota.  Usually Red Flag warnings aren’t issued until the later part of March but with the unprecedented dry winter with lack of moisture Langeberg stated Minnesota may likely have a more active spring wildfire season this year.
