UCAP Prepares for Record Breaking Season

It’s time to pull together all the year-end tax documents and enter a bunch of numbers in hopes of getting a refund. For low to moderate income families, who can’t afford tax prep fees, United Community Action Partnership (UCAP) is again offering free tax preparation clinics in Hutchinson, Jackson, Marshall, Redwood Falls, Willmar and Windom. But it takes a lot of people with big hearts to make it happen.

“Our tax clinics are volunteer driven,” said Michelle Jensen, UCAP’s Family Services Manager. “They can’t happen without the help of people in our communities.”

UCAP offers tax clinics in partnership with the United Way of Southwest MN, the MN Department of Revenue, the Internal Revenue Service, and other community partners to ensure that taxpayers receive their full tax credits and refunds. People don’t need tax knowledge to volunteer.

“We provide training so that anyone can become an IRS certified tax preparer,” Jensen said. “But we also need volunteers to greet people and help make sure they are prepared for their appointment.”

Training for the volunteer tax site positions are scheduled to take place in several locations throughout the month of January. Anyone who is interested in learning more can contact Michelle Jensen.

Tax clinics have been growing over the last several years, and that trend is expected to continue this year, as new MN tax credits are available and more people will need to file to claim those credits. Jensen hopes that enough people will step forward this year to keep up with what will likely be record-breaking demand.

“A few hours of someone’s time can, literally, put thousands of dollars back into the households that need it most.”

If you are interested in learning more about this high-impact program that served more than 2,200 households last year or would like to sign up to volunteer, please contact Michelle Jensen at 507-537-1416 ext. 1352 or taxstaff@unitedcapmn.org .

United Community Action Partnership is a non-profit organization that strives to help low and moderate income families improve their lives and move out of poverty. EOE/AA/ADA

Two $1,000 scholarships available to Federated members’ students

(Jackson, MN) — This is the 17th year that Federated Rural Electric, Jackson, will award two $1,000 Basin and L&O scholarships to two local Federated members’ sons or daughters.

“This scholarship comes from Basin Electric Power Cooperative based in Bismarck, North Dakota, which became a wholesale power supplier for Federated in 2008 and L&O Power Cooperative in Rock Rapids, Iowa,” stated Scott Reimer, Federated’s general manager. “Basin awards 137 of these scholarships to local electric cooperatives. Federated is excited to distribute the scholarship materials and select local students to receive the two $1,000 scholarships.”

The scholarships are available to high school seniors and college students who will be enrolled fulltime in an accredited two-year or four-year college, university or vocational/technical school working on an undergraduate degree. Previous Federated-Basin scholarship winners are not eligible to apply again. Applicants must be 25 and under and a U.S. citizen.

Applicants must complete a two-page application, including a grades’ transcript, ACT/SAT scores (optional), write an essay and have an outside appraisal (reference checklist). The one-page essay should address: What challenges face rural electric cooperatives in the coming years and how do you think challenges should be addressed?

The deadline to apply for this scholarship is January 26, 2024. Applications are available from Federated’s website (www.federatedrea.coop), at Federated’s office (507-847-3520 or info@federatedrea.coop) or from local high school counselors.

The scholarship must be used for college during Fall 2024. Checks will be made payable to the school as paid by Basin/L&O. Scholarships will be distributed in August.

Last year’s Basin scholarship winners were Emily Stauter, Welcome, and Faith Freking, Heron Lake.

In addition, keep in mind the Federated Rural Electric Operation Round Up scholarship applications will go out with the February electric bills; nine scholarships of $700 will be awarded locally.

Federated is a Touchstone Energy Cooperative serving 5,300 members in Jackson and Martin Counties.
