The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources wants to remind the public that Kilen Woods State Park will be closed to all visitors this weekend October 28th and 29th for a special deer hunt. The purpose of the hunt is to prevent overpopulation of deer and to protect natural resources. Natural Resource Program Coordinator for MN State Parks and Trails, Tavis Westbrook said, “Too many of one animal or plant species in an area can start to throw off the balance of other species in that area, when there are too many deer in a park, they feed too much on certain trees and native plants, so occasionally we allow deer hunts as a way to protect natural resources and bring the deer population back into better balance.”

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources thanks visitors for their patience and understanding during the hunts. For a list of state parks and recreation areas that are open, partially open or closed during the 2023 hunting season, visit www.mndnr.gov/parkhunts or contact the DNR Information Center at info.dnr@state.mn.us or call 888-646-6367 (8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sat.). Details on which areas of each park affected by the special deer hunts can also be found in the “Visitor Alert” boxes on the individual park website pages at www.mndnr.gov

I am one that really never believed in endings. I always thought that through thick and thin there was always that one person that would pull you in and fight for what is right. Someone that you could believe in and count on. In this world where there is so much bad happening there should be one person that you know you can trust and know is a safety net. In the whispers of the trees and the burst of the colorful leaves I hope that you are finding some solace in whatever you are facing. Endings I have come to believe are just a new beginning like the leaves on the trees. Where do they start in the Spring with a sweet little budding and then pow one day they are green and lush and become a necessity in the hot days of summer. They hold strong and do their part to house birds and bees and squirrels and all the other creatures.. Then in Fall they show their true colors of glory as they prepare to leave. They aren’t sad. They have served their purpose and go out with a bang… As they leave for the winter and wait it out… A new promise and a new adventure comes again in the Spring as a small bud of hope. So really endings aren’t always bad. It is just getting through the long winter months to find the new spring of hope! Reflect upon the trees today as you celebrate National Beer Day or if you have a more sophisticated palette, it is Global Champagne Day too… BUT give yourself a break no matter what and if you can’t get over your mood it’s okay you are forgiven because it is National Cranky Co-Worker Day…
