The Windom Area Schools Board of Education had an exciting announcement during their last board meeting. The Windom Eagles Booster Club is back. For those who don’t know, the booster club consists of a group of volunteers comprising of parents and community members who work together to get the community involved and excited about student athletes and athletic programs. That means the Windom Eagles Booster Club will raise money for Windom sports programs, plus connect athletes, arts, and technology together to promote, excite, and take pride in our schools and community.

The Windom Eagles Booster Club is a work in progress, but so far, they have formed a core committee, created by-laws, filed for and received approval for articles of incorporation, 501c3 status-meaning if you donate to the booster club, you can get a tax credit, and the booster club has a bank account so they can accept and manage donations.

The Windom Booster Club will fundraise with a school spirit store, tailgates, hold service auctions-things like community members can bid on teams to help with yardwork or other projects like that, hold a golf tournament in the summer of 2024, and they have some other ideas. Money raised will be used for sports equipment, scoreboards, school sports flags for home football games, player posters, and other needs as deemed by the Windom Athletic Director and Windom sports coaches.

You’re encouraged to join the Windom Eagles Booster Club Facebook page to receive updates as they move forward.

During the Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday, commissioners reviewed and discussed the proposed Cottonwood County Cannabis Oriented Business Ordinance. This ordinance outlines definitions, limitations of time, place and number of operations within the county, the registration process, registration and renewal fees, compliance checks, and penalties for violations.

In the draft ordinance, licensed cannabis and medical cannabis retailers may sell cannabis products Monday-Saturday 10am-8pm and Sunday 11am-4pm. A cannabis business is prohibited from operating within 500 feet of a school, 500 feet of a daycare, 500 feet of a residential treatment facility, and 500 feet of an attraction within a public park that is used by miners like playgrounds, swimming pools, and athletic fields.  There’s also a limit of total cannabis business registrations in Cottonwood County per population ranges.

Registration applications and renewals will be provided by Cottonwood County and shall be submitted to the Cottonwood County Auditor/Treasure’s Office. Individuals or a business found to have made a sale without a valid registration shall receive a $500 penalty for the first offense, a $1,000 penalty for the second offense, a $1,500 penalty for the third offense, and a $2,000 penalty for a fourth violation.

A motion was made and approved to set dates for a public hearing to discuss the Cottonwood County cannabis draft ordinance.

Hamilton said it’s a good option for small communities…
