The Minnesota State Climatology Office is looking for volunteer rainfall monitors for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS). The network includes more than 20,000 volunteers nationwide who measure precipitation in their backyards using a standard 4-inch-diameter rain gauge.

These rainfall monitoring activities are performed by individuals at home who submit their reports online. State Climatologist Luigi Romolo said the data from backyard rain gauges are helpful and important in many ways.

“These volunteers help the DNR verify high rain and snow totals after big events, monitor drought and flooding, make our precipitation maps more accurate and provide needed guidance on Minnesota’s changing climate,” Romolo said. “This is also a great educational activity for families with kids and a rewarding hobby for anyone interested in weather or climate.”

Volunteers are particularly needed outside the immediate Twin Cities metro area. Volunteers receive training on how to observe weather trends and how to submit their precipitation and weather event reports. All training material is available online. They must purchase or provide a standard 4-inch-diameter rain gauge (available at discount through CoCoRaHS) and have internet access to submit reports.

For the past three years, Minnesota has won the “CoCoRaHS Cup” for recruiting the most new volunteers of any state. “We’re hoping Minnesotans will again come through in 2023, to keep the Cup in Minnesota and, more important of course, to improve our state’s precipitation recording,” Romolo said.

It is St Patty’s Day!!! I only hope the luck of the Irish are upon you. Personally, I am from the Irish decent on my Dad’s side, but I didn’t grow up celebrating the way of green beers and party scenario… My mom always made the cornbeef and cabbage and there was a lot of pinching from the siblings if you didn’t have green on from sunrise and beyond sunset, we celebrated the holiday with pride, but the funny thing is this… My Dad, rest his soul, from the beginning of my memory always claimed that we weren’t “Green” Irish… We were “Orange” Irish… Green Irish aren’t as savvy and tough as us Orange Irish… I know right?!!!! Mind Blowing.. Who knew… Apparently only us Hegarty’s, which by the way it was also told that when my great great great granddaddy came to the States he was kind of a lazy man. Now mind you, that was back in the day when you stepped on the shores of the good ol’ United States you claimed your identity and stated your name. It went into the Official books and all your future ancestors to come would some day talk about it… Here I am… My maiden name COULD have been O’Hegarty but because my great great great granddaddy was kind of lazy he dropped the O so he didn’t have to keep writing it… It’s history… It’s true because that’s what they told me, who am I to discredit the Family Tree of knowledge.

If you haven’t heard it today this is my wish for you… May your days be many and your troubles be few. May all God’s blessings descend upon you. May peace be within you, May your heart be strong. May you find what you are seeking wherever you roam, and the insight to know when you are going too far.

May God hold you in the palm of His Hand. HAPPY ST PATRICK’S DAY!!!!
