If you haven’t noticed yet the final bridge work on County Road 5 by the Golf Course in Windom is officially underway. The Cottonwood County Public Works Department says construction began last week for the bridge replacement project along County Road 5, about three-quarters of a mile south of Highway 62. This marks what county officials are calling the final bridge replacement project in the area. The work includes replacing the bridge itself, adding rip rap to help protect against erosion, along with road grading and paving to finish the project. Drivers should plan ahead, because County Road 5 will be closed through September while construction is completed. Motorists are being asked to use posted detours and allow extra travel time. The detour route takes traffic along Highway 62, Cottonwood County Road 6, Jackson County Roads 7 and 32, and Jackson County Road 9.

Families in the Windom area are getting an early start on planning for the next school year, as Windom Area Schools has opened registration for both Bridges Preschool and the new Soaring Eagles Childcare Center for 2026-2027. Bridges Preschool registration is now open for children who will be 3 or 4 years old by September 1, 2026. The preschool program focuses on academic, social, and emotional development, offering part-time options for 3-year-olds and daily classes for 4-year-olds. School officials note that children currently enrolled in the Bridges 3s program will automatically move into next year’s 4s class and do not need to register again. At the same time, Windom Area Schools is also now enrolling children for the new Soaring Eagles Childcare Center, which is scheduled to open September 1 following renovations at Highland Early Learning Center. Located at 68 10th Street in Windom, the updated facility will include infant, toddler, and preschool rooms designed to provide a safe and engaging learning environment.

School officials say space is limited for childcare enrollment and encourage families to reserve a spot soon. Registration and interest forms for both programs can be found on the Windom Schools website. For preschool questions, families can contact Highland Early Learning Center at 831-6940, Ext. 1.
