The American Legion Auxiliary in Windom will hold its annual poppy distribution starting today  through the 14th at Hy-Vee. Volunteers will be at Hy-Vee from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day accepting donations and distributing poppies. Community members who make a donation can also register for a free American flag. The poppy has long been a symbol of remembrance for fallen service members. After World War I, the flower became linked with honoring those who died in service. In 1918, Moina Michael encouraged Americans to wear the poppy in memory of the war dead. The tradition was also inspired by the poem In Flanders Fields, written by Canadian doctor John McCrae. Veterans and volunteers handcraft the poppies, and donations collected during the distribution help support veterans, military members and their families in local communities. The American Legion Auxiliary began its Poppy Program in 1921. This year also marks the sixth year that second graders from Windom Public Schools are taking part in the poppy coloring contest. Each of the four classrooms will have a first-, second- and third-place winners, that will receive an ice cream cone from Dairy Queen. The students’ artwork will be displayed in store windows around Windom leading up to National Poppy Day on May 22nd. All participants will receive a poppy bookmark and a 4-by-6-inch American flag.

Residents of Windom are being encouraged to take part in the citywide cleanup event scheduled for this Saturday, May 16th. It’s a perfect opportunity to dispose of large unwanted items and get your house and property clean. City wide cleanup allows citizens curbside pickup of up to 10 large household goods or furniture items. Residents are asked to place items at the curb by 6 a.m. on Saturday and are reminded not to place items in alleys. The cleanup does not include appliances, electronics, or regular household trash that fits inside weekly garbage containers. Glass and mirror items also will not be accepted curbside, but they can be taken and dropped off at the designated drop-off site at Tegels Park from 7am to Noon. Please note residents must provide proof of Windom residency, and all items must be visible for inspection in open boxes. Bags will not be accepted. Officials emphasized several materials are prohibited from both pickup and drop-off services, including hazardous waste, tires, paints, batteries, construction materials, fluorescent tubes, used oil, appliances, electronics, and concrete. Mattress recycling is on Thursday and Friday, May 14 and 15. Residents wishing to dispose of mattresses or box springs must purchase tags from City Hall by TODAY, May 12th. Tags cost $10 for the first two items, while additional tags are $17 each. Mattresses and box springs without tags will not be collected. Get those basements and garages cleaned out and on the curb! Let’s get the town cleaned up before summer celebrations and visitors coming to visit!

As a reminder, today at 4:30 p.m. the Windom City Council will hold a special meeting at the Windom Community Center to hear proposals from three companies interested in purchasing the city’s WindomNet telecommunications system. Representatives from Midco, Southwest Minnesota Broadband Services of Lakefield, and Federated Broadband of Jackson will each give 30-minute presentations outlining their plans for service, pricing, customer support, and system reach if they acquire WindomNet. City officials say no action will be taken on a possible sale during Tuesday’s meeting. The session is intended to give council members and residents an opportunity to hear directly from the companies as the city continues evaluating future ownership options for the municipal broadband system. The meeting is open to the public for listening only, with no public comment scheduled. Residents with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact city officials or speak with the companies after the presentations.
