Nearly 60 traffic safety leaders from across southern Minnesota are gathering today in St. James for the South Central Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths workshop. The event will bring together law enforcement, engineers, educators, emergency medical and trauma services, and local leaders to discuss ways to reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries on regional roadways. Toward Zero Deaths, a statewide effort launched in 2003, reports traffic-related deaths have declined 43 percent through 2025. Organizers say continued collaboration and changing dangerous driving behaviors remain critical to reaching the goal of zero roadway fatalities. Workshop topics will include crash trend data, cable median barrier safety, updates on oral fluid roadside testing and cannabis, and the role of artificial intelligence and automated vehicle technology in improving traffic safety. The workshop is hosted by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota Department of Transportation.
