Minnesota deer hunters will be seeing new firearm rules this fall as counties have made their decisions on whether to allow rifles or remain shotgun-only for the 2026 season. A 2025 law ended the longtime statewide “shotgun zone,” giving counties local control over what firearms are permitted. The key date is tomorrow May 5th when counties are asked to submit their decisions so they can be included in the official 2026 hunting regulations booklet. If a county misses the deadline, hunters may need to check with local officials to confirm what’s allowed. In southwest Minnesota, Cottonwood, Jackson, Nobles, Rock, Brown, Faribault, and Watonwan counties will remain shotgun-only, while Murray, Redwood, Pipestone, Lyon, and Martin counties will allow the use of higher-powered rifles for firearms deer hunting. State officials say enforcement will focus on education during the transition, but hunters are still expected to follow county rules or risk fines, loss of game, or other penalties.
