I learned something new this week that I did not even think possible but did you know, Texting 911 is an option in emergencies? I reached out to Cottonwood and Jackson County to learn more about this because it is something that I think is important to know. Texting 911 is an option but local law enforcement says it should only be used in specific situations. According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Text-to-911 has been available statewide since upgrades to the emergency system known as NextGen 911 were rolled out over the past several years. Jackson County Sheriff, Shawn Haken says the service has actually been in southwest Minnesota for quite some time and says Nobles County first added the capability in 2017 as a regional dispatch center, with Jackson County adding it in 2018. Today, every 911 dispatch center in Minnesota can receive emergency texts. Haken says locally, Text-to-911 isn’t used very often only about five to six times per year and unfortunately not always in the right situations. He says while texting can be helpful, it’s generally not the preferred method. Haken explains texting takes longer, and things like autocorrect can create confusion. But he says it can be safer in certain emergencies, like domestic situations or when someone is hiding from an intruder and can’t speak. Daniel Quade, Dispatch Supervisor with the Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office, agrees. Quade says dispatchers still prefer voice calls because they allow for faster communication and give responders more information, like background noise and tone of voice. However, Quade says texting can be a critical tool for those who are deaf, hard of hearing, or in situations where speaking could put them in danger. Both officials stress that if you do text 911, the most important thing is to include your location and a brief description of the emergency right away. Dispatchers will then text back with follow-up questions. They also note that while dispatchers can still identify your location when you text, it may not be as accurate as a voice call so being specific is key. And while the service is available across Minnesota, Quade says it’s not yet available everywhere nationwide. The bottom line from local law enforcement: Text-to-911 is a helpful backup but in an emergency, calling is still the fastest and most effective way to get help. It’s officially Severe Weather Awareness Week, and Monday brought it in with a bang. National Weather Service, Minnesota Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and local agencies are sharing important information on how to prepare for and survive severe weather. Today features the statewide tornado drills, with mock warnings designed to help schools, businesses, and residents practice their emergency procedures. There will be two drills, one at 1:45 this afternoon and another at 6:45 this evening. Officials say these drills are crucial, helping make emergency responses feel more natural, so when severe weather strikes for real, you’re ready.
