Minnesota officials are urging residents to brush up on their safety plans as Severe Weather Awareness Week approaches. While the official statewide campaign begins April 13th, local emergency managers are getting a head start with critical training this coming Monday, April 6th. Forecasters with the National Weather Service say now is the time to prepare before the spring storm season turns active. Minnesota’s official Severe Weather Awareness Week is scheduled for April 13th through the 17th, featuring the annual statewide tornado drills on Thursday, April 16th at 1:45pm and 6:45pm. However, local opportunities for in-person training are limited this year. One of the final classroom sessions in our region is set for this Monday, April 6th, in Slayton. Murray County Emergency Management Director Carl Nyquist says the SKYWARN class will cover storm identification and reporting, as well as essential safety protocols for families and businesses. The session begins at 7:00 PM at the Murray County Central Auditorium located at 2420 28th Street Slayton. It is free and open to the public with no pre-registration required. For those unable to attend the Slayton session, the National Weather Service is offering a limited number of virtual classes. A full calendar of those dates can be found online at weather.gov/fsd/spottercalendar
