The Windom Area Health Governing Board met March 23rd, with a positive long-term outlook highlighted by a growing vision to become a teaching hospital. In an interview on KDOM’s Kalediscope, Chief Nursing Officer Landon Johnson says that effort is already underway.

Johnson says the goal is not only to educate future healthcare professionals—but to expose them to the impact of rural medicine.

He says students often come in with limited expectations—but leave impressed by the level of care and services available locally.

Johnson adds the program could also help recruit future providers to the area.

Windom Area Health is already hosting medical students, nurse practitioner students, and nursing students from across the region—many on a weekly basis. Financially, the board reported a mixed month. February saw an operating loss of about 382-thousand dollars due to lower outpatient volumes. However, the hospital remains strong overall, reporting a year-to-date positive margin of roughly 350-thousand dollars, outperforming budget expectations. In other updates, Windom Area Health will soon be featured in a nationwide public television documentary focused on rural healthcare, and preparations are underway for the next fiscal year budget.
