The Windom Area Schools Board of Education met last night. Board members approved personnel changes. Several action items were approved during the meeting, including the adoption of a new social studies curriculum, fundraising requests for the robotics and drones program and the high school baseball team, and the Achievement and Integration application and budget submitted in partnership with neighboring school districts. The board also approved a number of academic and scheduling updates, including new graduation requirements of 25 credits for the Class of 2027 and 24 credits for the Class of 2028 and beyond, as well as an amended 2026–2027 academic calendar. Administrators also presented information about a proposed seven-period day at the middle and high school. One of the key items discussed was support for the proposed Soaring Eagles Childcare Center, which is part of the community initiative known as Windom’s Way Forward. The childcare center is planned for the Highland Early Learning Center and could serve between 57 and 77 children in infant, toddler, and preschool classrooms. The board approved a commitment of $28,000 per year for five years toward the center’s operational funding. The childcare project is being supported through a partnership involving the school district, the City of Windom, Cottonwood County, Windom Area Health, and Remick, along with grants and donations to cover remodeling costs. Supporters say the project will help address the local childcare shortage, support workforce development, and make Windom a more attractive place for families to live and work.

March is a month filled with meaningful observances that highlight learning, inclusion, service, and the achievements of women. National Reading Month is celebrated throughout March to encourage people of all ages to develop a love for books and reading. Schools and libraries often mark the month with reading challenges, book events, and activities that promote literacy. March is also Disability Awareness Month, which focuses on recognizing the experiences, rights, and contributions of people with developmental disabilities while encouraging communities to promote inclusion and equal opportunities for all. Social Work Month has been observed since 1963 to recognize the important work of social workers who support individuals and families through challenges. The 2026 theme is “Social Work: Uplift. Defend. Transform.” And last but not least, March is Women’s History Month, this is a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women throughout history and in communities today. Some of my most favorite women just to mention a few in no particular order include Katharine Hepburn, Mother Teresa, Betty White, Maya Angelo, Rosa Parks, Irma Bombeck, Sandra Day O’Connor, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and there are so many more strong women that set the course of being strong, brave, creative and funny! Together, these observances serve as reminders of the importance of education, inclusion, service, and recognizing the people who help shape our communities.
