I don’t know if you have been following but I am hooked up and committed!!! It is Eaglecam Season again and I am so excited! The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources shared an exciting EagleCam update as the eagle pair welcomed their first egg the morning of Monday, February 16th. Officials say it’s possible one or two more eggs have been laid since then, as a typical bald eagle clutch contains one to three eggs, with two being the most common. Eagle eggs are dull white without markings and measure about 2.3 to 3.3 inches long. They usually hatch after 34 to 39 days of incubation, meaning viewers could see signs of a chick in the nest as early as March 21st. Until then, at least one adult eagle will always be visible on camera. The pair takes turns incubating the egg or eggs, giving each other time to hunt. That means plenty of eagle activity for viewers in the weeks ahead. Adults move very carefully while tending their clutch, gently turning the eggs and keeping them warm with a special brood patch — an area of bare skin that helps transfer body heat. The DNR also noted that this year’s camera view is different from past seasons. When the EagleCam was set up, the pair had two nests close to each other. To ensure coverage no matter which nest the eagles chose, the camera was placed high enough to view both. The pair ultimately selected the nest farther away and at eye level with the camera, which means there is no overhead view this season and the eggs cannot be seen clearly. Officials say they will not disturb the eagles now that incubation has begun, but they remain committed to providing the best possible view throughout the season. You can watch the EagleCam live at www.mndnr.gov/eaglecam or on the DNR’s YouTube page.
