Is anyone else feeling like this week has been overwhelming? Between all the noise in the background of life It just seems like a day to throw out my kind of news…

I was sent a notice that was posted about coyotes in the north part of town and pets might need to be kept inside, so of course I contacted DNR to get the scoop of what people need to know. According to Area Wildlife Manager with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Brian Nyborg, there have been no confirmed reports of coyotes inside the City of Windom. Nyborg says what people are likely hearing are coyotes outside of town. During calm nights, especially this time of year, which is breeding season, coyotes can be very vocal. Their howls can travel long distances and may sound much closer than they actually are. Nyborg went onto say, “I am confident residents of Windom can hear coyotes vocalizing on all sides of Windom,” noting he regularly hears them north and south of Jackson, where he lives. Coyotes are common throughout Minnesota and typically avoid people. They are about 30 pounds on average and resemble a small German Shepherd. Their primary foods include rabbits and mice, but they are opportunistic feeders. While encounters are rare, the DNR recommends residents take simple precautions if concerned:

  • Secure garbage and remove outdoor food sources
  • Do not leave pet food outside
  • Supervise small pets when outdoors
  • Never feed coyotes
  • Harass coyotes that do not run away by shouting or making noise

Experts say coyotes that become accustomed to humans, often through feeding are more likely to cause problems. The DNR does not trap or relocate coyotes. In Minnesota, coyotes are unprotected and may be taken by landowners if necessary. More information on living with coyotes is available on the Minnesota DNR website. Nyborg stated It’s possible, but unlikely that coyotes are out in the North end of Windom but if you do encounter them you can report to your local DNR Officer.

On another note…

I had a blast working the polls on Tuesday for the School Referendum. It was so much fun seeing so many people show up to voice their opinion by putting the ink to the ballot. I am sad that the referendum didn’t pass because well, I think the Fine Arts Department is in desperate need of a facility that will enhance and create a stage for greatness, but I am just one person with an opinion… I see both sides of the issue BUT I’m a little partial to the Fine Arts department and the amazing kids that partake in Speech, Drama, Debate, etc… On another note… TODAY IS World Radio Day… It is a day to find out how radio is still changing lives across the globe. I don’t know if you know, but the cool thing about radio is it’s still relevant and important in our daily lives. During those long drives for vacation or maybe to work, the radio is always with you, keeping everyone singing and keeping you informed. It’s like a great friend and neighbor, one who’s always there and never lets you down. It’s also National Apology Day which I suppose is a must since tomorrow is Valentines Day… I’m not all about Valentines Day because I think you should show your love every day to those that mean something to you. BUT I also am not going to turn down a box of chocolates that are coconut filled or orange cream filled… OR chocolate covered strawberries. I mean why would you???? I want to say thank you to all of you that took the time to chat with me this past Tuesday. Wow, talk about feeling the love. It truly is an honor to bring you the news, weather, sports and entertainment and thank you for being loyal listeners and just all-around great people! Peace out and Love On.. It is the weekend!!!
