Today is Election Day in Windom, and voters are being asked to decide on a two-question school bond referendum that would fund major facility improvements for Windom Area Schools. Question One focuses on upgrades to existing school facilities. Proposed projects include a new fine arts center that would also serve as a storm shelter, expanded gym and wrestling space, updated locker rooms, a repurposed lecture hall into a robotics and STEM learning area, and improvements to athletic facilities including a new track and multipurpose turf field. Question Two, which can only pass if Question One is approved, would fund new football, soccer, baseball, and softball fields designed for both student and community use. Election officials stress that the questions are linked. If Question One does not pass, Question Two will not take effect, even if it receives enough yes votes. Voting is open TODAY from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Windom Community Center. Whether your vote is yes or no, the only way your opinion is counted is by casting a ballot. Need more information? Firearms deer hunting in Minnesota will look different starting in the fall of 2026. Last year, state lawmakers approved the use of high-powered rifles statewide during the firearms deer season. However, counties still have the option to restrict hunting to shotguns only, as they have in the past. That decision is now up for discussion in Cottonwood County. County commissioners will hold two public hearings on Wednesday, February 11th, to gather public input. The meetings are set for 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the basement conference room at the Law Enforcement Center in Windom. Hunters and residents are encouraged to attend and share their thoughts before any local decision is made.
