The new community collaboration in Windom to address one of the area’s most pressing challenges, access to quality childcare, is starting to materialize. The Windom Vision Group called Windom’s Way Forward met yesterday, bringing together leaders from education, city government, economic development, healthcare, banking, and local business. Among those at the table were Windom Area Schools Superintendent Jamie Frank, who stated that the group has moved beyond discussion and is now setting clear priorities to present at the next meeting with First Children’s Finance, who is leading group in creating solutions to the ongoing childcare crisis, focusing on care for children from six weeks old through school age. Frank went onto say, this is really about supporting families and strengthening our workforce, and if we want Windom to grow and thrive, childcare has to be part of the conversation.

During the meeting, the group established three initial focus areas. The first looks at the possibility of a licensed childcare center; the second focuses on supporting and expanding in-home daycare options and supporting existing providers, and the third focuses on building a long-term childcare workforce through training and local career pathways. Frank emphasized that the project is still in its early stages, with planning, approvals, and funding conversations ahead.

  • The first goal centers on location and financing for a future licensed childcare center. The group’s objective is to establish a center by September of 2026, with space to serve approximately 50 children, pending approvals, licensing, renovations, and a mix of public, private, and grant funding.
  • A second goal focuses on strengthening in-home daycare options. By the end of 2026, Windom’s Way Forward aims to support both existing and new in-home providers through grant opportunities, training, and other resources designed to reduce barriers and expand available childcare options for families.
  • The third goal looks at the childcare workforce itself. The group plans to build a sustainable local pipeline by hiring and training qualified staff and exploring opportunities for childcare education and certification through Windom Area Schools.

Frank says the approach is intentional and collaborative. It is a long-term investment in our community and with each SMART GOAL we are creating a path forward to support families, employers, and the future of Windom. As Windom’s Way Forward continues, more information will be available to public as this group wants to be as transparent as possible.
