Farmers across Greater Minnesota can now apply for new funding to support on-farm climate adaptation projects. The University of Minnesota Extension’s Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships has opened applications for its Farmer Climate Action Fund. Small, competitive grants will back farmer-led projects that are ready to go everything from planting wildlife corridors and improving soil health to switching to clean-energy equipment and adding agroforestry systems. Tobin Tyler, with the Southwest RSDP, says the fund helps farmers innovate while reducing risks tied to climate change. In the program’s first round, 29 projects were funded, including biochar production, electric-powered equipment, fish-waste fertilizer and cover crops. Priority goes to projects that can be completed by December 31, 2026. The application deadline is January 2, with awards announced in early February. Details are available at www.z.umn.edu/FarmerFund

Are you all set for Thanksgiving? Are you a Black Friday or a Cyber Monday kind of person? Well I want to encourage you to step out of those two big box consuming shopping days and consider Small Business Saturday to cross off your need to get lists. Small Business Saturday is a nationwide shopping event held each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It was launched in 2010 as a way to draw attention to the independent shops and local entrepreneurs that often get overshadowed by the major retailers dominating Black Friday and Cyber Monday. At its core, the day is designed to remind consumers that small storefronts play a large role in local economies. When people spend money at a neighborhood bakery, bookstore, or hardware shop, more of that money stays in the community supporting local jobs, services, and the character of the area. Small Business Saturday provides a critical revenue after a slow fall or in the weeks leading up to the holidays. It’s a chance to bring in new customers who might otherwise default to online shopping or chain stores. The day also helps highlight what can’t be shipped in a box: personal service, handcrafted goods, and relationships built over time. And while it lasts only one day, many small businesses hope it encourages shoppers to think local long after the signs and promotions come down. Small Business Saturday is this coming Saturday, a reminder that local stores matter, and that even small purchases can have a big impact.
