The Windom City Council officially approved a plan that gives the Windom Police Department its own firearms training range within city limits. At their last meeting, the council approved a lease agreement allowing the department to use a one-acre plot of land for the new facility. The land, located in Section 12 of Cottonwood County, will be leased from the Ketzenberg families for $500 per year over the first five years. After that, rent increases to $600 annually. Police Chief Scott Peterson says this move will enhance training efficiency and officer safety. Peterson went onto say when we train at Sun Valley Gun Club, we always have to leave one officer behind to stay on patrol. With this new range in town, our whole department can train together. The lease allows the city to install a storage shed, target stands, tables, and other necessary equipment at the site, pending landowner approval. The city also received an access easement for vehicles to reach the property via 490th Avenue. The lease runs through May 31st, 2030, and will automatically renew each year unless either party provides 90 days’ notice. The city is also responsible for insurance and ensuring the range complies with all local, state, and federal regulations. The facility is intended solely for law enforcement use.
